Mikaela Black and Alexandria McCraine are the first two students in Okaloosa County to earn passing scores on the Advanced Placement Chinese Language and Culture exam.  They took the exam this past May, and “they were successful in translating and transforming the Chinese language they learned, as part of the NHS Chinese Program, into holistic performance on the exam,” according to Ching Ching Shen, NHS Chinese teacher.  The AP Chinese Language and Culture course in Mandarin Chinese emphasizes communication by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills to real-life situations.  To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Chinese.

Alexandria is a junior at NHS, and Mikaela attends the University of Central Florida.  For more information about the Chinese program at NHS, contact Ms. Shen at shenc@mail.okaloosa.k12.fl.us.
