Rachel Shelikoff and Tyler Kinard Nominated for Chelco Program
Rachel Shelikoff and Tyler Kinard, both juniors at Niceville High School, have been nominated to enter Chelco’s Youth Tour Program.  Chelco sponsors the annual contest for high school juniors that allows deserving students to compete for an all expense paid, week-long trip to Washington, D.C. Electric cooperatives all over the country hold this contest that was inspired by Lyndon Johnson in 1957 when he was a senator. That year, electric cooperatives in Texas began sending groups of young people to Washington to work during the summer in Senator Johnson’s office and learn more about their government.  The program is designed for young people to increase their understanding of rural electric cooperatives, become familiar with the historical and political environment of the nation’s capital, visit elected officials and meet students from all over the country.  CHELCO is a member-owned electric cooperative that serves the energy needs of approximately 45,000 homes and businesses in Okaloosa and Walton counties.    Rachel and Tyler will be attending the area Chelco conference in Tallahassee this spring.

Food Delivery NoticeFOOD DELIVERY NOTICE
At NHS, one of our goals is to limit disruptions to classroom instruction in order to provide our students with an environment that is conducive to learning.  Currently, we are experiencing excessive classroom disruptions due to food/lunches being dropped off at the attendance office for students. In many cases, classes are being disrupted up to three times over the course of the period.  As we enter the second semester, it would be greatly appreciated if we could eliminate these disruptions to classroom instruction.   If you must bring food to your child during the school day, please make arrangements with your child to come to attendance between classes and pick up the food.  Please know that in the future we will not call down and disturb a class for a delivery.  We thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter and we greatly appreciate your support of Niceville High School.

School Grade Results Show Niceville High School at the Top
FCAT scores released on January 4 indicate that NHS leads the district in math, reading and science.

NHS Receives A+Niceville High School—The Florida Department of Education released school grades for high schools last Tuesday.  The scores show that Niceville High School earned the top ranking in all areas when compared to the Okaloosa School District’s other five traditional high schools.

In mathematics, 94% of students tested scored at Level 3 orhigher.  (A student who scores at a Level 3 or higher is considered proficient in that subject area.)  In reading, 74% of students scored at Level 3 or higher.  Science scores show that 68% of NHS students scored at Level 3 or higher.  In writing, 84% of students scored at Level 3 or higher.

“Once again the school grade scores prove that NHS provides a quality education for all students in our community,” said Becca Childress, NHS math teacher.

Niceville High School is ranked #21 in Florida in terms of the total number of FCAT and High School points earned on the state’s grading scale.  However, if all schools which scored higher than NHS and have an application process of some kind for entrance were removed from the list, Niceville High School would rank #2.  The current enrollment at NHS is 1,872 of which 99% of all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students were tested.  NHS has no application or admissions requirements for its programs.

“Being ranked #2 two in Florida among schools that admit any and all students is exceptional,” said Patricia Mixon, NHS language arts teacher.  “I also feel our outstanding scores are a direct result of our rigorous curriculum.”

NWF Collegiate High School, a charter school with a current enrollment of 285, is the only other high school in Okaloosa County showing higher marks than NHS.  The Collegiate High School, which screens students for admission, tested 97% of its 10th and 11th grade students.

Stephanie Hsiang Chosen as Coca-Cola Scholars Semifinalist

Stephanie Hsiang, Semifinalist in the Coca Cola Scholars Program

Stephanie Hsiang, a senior at Niceville High School, has been selected as a Semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Because so few of the 84,000 applicants for the Coca-Cola Scholars Program advance as Semifinalists, it is an outstanding achievement for Stephanie.  As one of 2,200 Semifinalists, she will continue the application process by distinguishing herself academically and personally.

Students selected as one of the 250 Coca-Cola Scholars must attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend (April 12-15, 2012) at the Scholars Foundation's expense during which time they will interview for one of 50 National Scholar awards of $20,000. The remaining 200 Scholars will receive Regional Scholar awards valued at $10,000.
